The following is information about hirings and promotions of businesspeople in the Augusta area:

Erik P. Hammarlund II, P.E. has been promoted to engineering department manager for W.R. Toole Engineers Inc.

Elmer Falls has been selected as the chief of safety and security at Paine College.

Cleveland & Anderson has hired Teresa G. Brown, Peyton R. Sweat, and Brian S. Tootle as staff accountants.

Denise Hendrix, copy editor at The Augusta Chronicle, has been promoted to marketing assistant in the marketing and education department.

BIZ BITS

The following is information about awards and personal honors of businesspeople in the Augusta area:

Allison Samuels, born and raised in Augusta and currently a Los Angeles Correspondent for Newsweek magazine, received an award from the National Association of Black Journalists for her work on the March 17, 1997, Newsweek cover package "Black Like Who?" The story examines the generation gap that has grown between blacks of the civil rights generation and their offspring, who are more often interested in the world of hip-hop, rather than the political and social issues, which were the fulcrum of their parents struggle.

Janet I. Farley, Ed.M., a career consultant for Right Associates Government Services at Army Career and Alumni Program Center on Fort Gordon, wrote a job search book titled Jobs and the Military Spouse: Married, Mobile and Motivated for the New Job Market (Impact Publications, July 1997).

Greg Paschal, investment representative for Edward Jones in Aiken, has been authorized by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to use the marks CFP and Certified Financial Planner in accordance with the CFP Board certification and post-certification requirements.

Rick Cundey and Heidi B. Estroff, CFP, of the RobinsonHumphrey Co.'s Augusta office, recently attended Smith Barney's Consulting Group University, an advanced professional development program for financial consultants who concentrate in managed money consulting.

Local remodelor Ralph Bowles of Bowles Construction Inc. recently won a Chrysalis Award Excellence during the Southern Building Show and Conference. Mr. Bowles won the award for "Best Insurance Restoration $25,000 to $75,000."

Hank Coles of Apple Homes (Augusta), Kenneth Bugg of Environs of Augusta and Calvin Mathes of Apple Homes (Augusta) has received the designation of Certified Manufactured Housing Consultant.
