Little replaces Richardson

Jeff "Whitey" Richardson's stay in Augusta was a short one.

Richardson, the GreenJackets' manager for the first half of this season, was named manager of the advanced Class A Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League on Wednesday. Richardson, 31, will be replaced by team hitting coach Scott Little, 34, who also managed the Jackets in 1992 and 1994.

Richardson's promotion follows the Pittsburgh Pirates' decision to make Class AA Carolina manager Marc Hill a roving catching instructor. Lynchburg manager Jeff Banister, who managed Augusta in 1995, was moved to Carolina to fill Hill's position.

The Jackets finished the first half of the South Atlantic League season at 34-37, 81/2 games behind the Macon Braves, who won the Southern Division. They begin the second half tonight at Charleston, S.C.

Richardson's telephone has been disconnected and he was unavailable for comment.

This will be Little's fifth managing position. He has an overall record of 212-280, including a 50-86 mark in '94, when the Jackets were 18-50 in the second half.
