Medical College

of Georgia

  • The following students from Richmond County have been named to the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing Athens dean's list for winter quarter. Students earning a 3.5 grade-point average or higher are named to the dean's list. Shirley K. Burkett, Lauren E. Carr, Angela L. Dall, Heather M. Dismuke, Joseph D. Dominici, Marion S. Phinizy and Cynthia A. Strader, Augusta.
  • The following students from Richmond County graduated from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry spring quarter with a doctor of dental medicine degree: John Sherman Blalock, Robert Keith Bogart, Lie-Hsing Chang, Louis Andrew Day, Neha Galiara, Richard Scott Gardner, Scott O'Neal Henderson, Mark Phillip Moore, Arlene McSwain Oldham, Lisa Alexander Strickland and Richard Dana Wilbanks, Augusta.
  • The School of Dentistry recognized its outstanding students at the Senior Awards Ceremony at MCG June 4.
  • John S. Blalock received the following awards:The 1997 Senior Class President Certificate for service as president of the graduating class; the American College of Dentists Professionalism Award for ethical professional excellence; the American Student Dental Association Award of Excellence for service to the school, the profession and the community;and the American Student Dental Association President Award for service as president of the American Student Dental Association during his junior year.

    Robert K. Bogart received the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology Award for exceptional interest and accomplishment in dental radiology. He also received the International College of Dentists Award.

    Thomas T. Britt received the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Certificate for induction into the national honor society. He also received the Quintessence International Restorative Dentistry Award for outstanding performance in restorative dentistry.

    W. Gregory Elwell received honorable mention from the American College of Dentists for writing his manuscript on ethics in dentistry.

    Brenda G. Fritz received the American Academy of Dental Practice Administration Award for the second-highest average for the three practice management courses. She also received the Organization of Teachers of Oral Diagnosis Award for excellence in oral diagnosis.

    Laura L. Griffiths received the Academy of General Dentistry Award for demonstrating the greatest interest in, knowledge of and proficiency in general dentistry; the Oral Pathology Achievement Award for achievement in oral pathology; and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Certificate for induction into the honor society.

    Sherida Jacobs received the American Society of Dentistry for Children Award and the Georgia Society of Dentistry for Children Award for outstanding achievements in pediatric dentistry.

    Lisa M. Johnson received the Oral Pathology Achievement Award for achievement in oral pathology. She also received the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Certificate for induction into the honor society.

    Gina Mack of Decatur, Ga., received the Student National Dental Association Award for outstanding service as president of the MCG chapter of the Student National Dental Association.

    John M. Mazzawi received the American College of Prosthodontics Achievement Award for outstanding ability in prosthodontics and high academic and clinical achievement.

    Mark P. Moore received the following awards: The Hu-Friedy Golden Forceps Award for outstanding achievement in oral surgery; the Oral Pathology Achievement Award for achievement in oral pathology; the Dentsply International Merit Award for the highest scholastic achievement in the five preclinical and four clinical prosthodontics courses; and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Certificate for induction into the honor society.

    Jody Morgan received the Quintessence International Periodontics Achievement Award for outstanding clinical performance in periodontics.

    Christopher S. Noel received the following awards:the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry Award for outstanding achievement in esthetic dentistry; the American Association of Endodontists Award for outstanding achievement in endodontics; and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Certificate for induction into the honor society.

    Stephen M. Phelps received the Academy of Operative Dentistry Award for excellence in operative dentistry. He also received the Hu-Friedy Golden Carver Award for outstanding achievement in restorative dentistry.

    Lisa A. Strickland received the American Association of Orthodontics Award for achievement in orthodontics. She also received the Senior Oral Medicine Case Award for the most outstanding case based on clinical performance and case presentation.

    Laurie A. Strohschein received the AFTCO Associates Practice Management Award for the highest average for the three practice management courses; the Alpha Omega Award for Academic Excellence for the highest academic rank in the graduating class; the American Academy of Oral Medicine Award for outstanding achievement and interest in oral medicine;the American Academy of Oral Pathology Award for the highest academic average in five oral pathology courses; the American Academy of Periodontology Award for achievement in periodontology; the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Award for the highest academic average in the didactic and clinical courses in oral and maxillofacial surgery; the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology Award for the highest academic average in anesthesia, sedation and pain control; the Anatomical Sciences Award for the highest academic average in the anatomical sciences; the Teledyne Water Pik Prosthodontic Award for achievement in prosthodontics; and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Certificate for induction into the honor society.

    Paul E. Thompson received the Southeastern Academy of Prosthodontics Award for excellence in prosthodontics.

    John T. Uetsuki received the Ronald Goldstein Esthetic Dentistry Award.

    Jeremy R. Ward received the American College of Dentists Ethics Essay Award.

    John K. Weaver received the American Equilibrium Society Award for outstanding clinical and didactic performance in the science of occlusion and temporomandibular joint function. He also received the Pierre Fauchard Academy Award, presented to an outstanding senior who has exhibited leadership and who through accomplishments has demonstrated dedication to the advancement of dental literature.
