`Midnight' gone from Savannah, but `Claudine's Return' arrives

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Although "Midnight" mania has abated in the Savannah area, "Claudine's Return" has come to Tybee Island.

The movie began six weeks of filming this week.

It stars Christina Applegate, best known for her stint as Kellie Bundy on television's "Married with Children," and Stefano Dionisi, who has appeared in such films as "Correre Contro," and "Farinelli," which won the 1995 Golden Globe award for best foreign film.

"This is another great project for the Savannah area and especially Tybee Island," said Jay Self, the city's film services director. "The script was so perfect for Tybee, it was spooky."

Antonio Tibaldi is directing "Claudine's Return." Some of his previous films are "Little Boy Blue," "Correre Contro," and "On My Own."

In the movie, Ms. Applegate plays Claudine, a dancer, who meets a drifter, played by Dionisi, on Dolphin Island, as Tybee is called in the film, but the course of their romance hardly runs smooth.

Self thinks the visitors' perspective on Tybee should be interesting.

"The strong Italian influence brought to this project by the director ... will create a distinct vision of an island whose beauty and funkiness so many take for granted," he said.

Director Clint Eastwood wrapped up Savannah shooting last weekend on "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," the movie version of John Berendt's book about a notorious homosexual slaying.
