Isaiah 56:11 says, "Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look their own way, every one for his gain from his quarter." Greed and self gain are the only reasons I can see for putting a liquor store in Hephzibah.
I have lived in the Hephzibah area since September 1986 and it has grown and done well without a liquor store. Now an individual who obviously already has a good income and wealth (he owns the Jerry's Red and White, the Wife Saver restaurant, the video store, and perhaps other businesses in the area) feels Hephzibah needs a liquor store.
He gave City Council the excuse that it would bring in more tax revenue and business to the city of Hephzibah. However, this individual lives in Columbia County. If we were really concerned about the tax revenue in Hephzibah and Richmond County, he would live in Hephzibah. If he is really concerned about bringing business to Hephzibah, Hephzibah could use a good auto parts store. Or why not enlarge Jerry's Red and White to carry a much larger variety of products? ... Could it be because the profit margin for these businesses is not nearly as high as they are for a liquor store?
Of course, a liquor store will also bring to Hephzibah more DUIs, more automobile accidents which kill and maim innocent people, more domestic violence, more children going without food and clothes, etc. ...
The only way I see to get this individual's attention is through his pocketbook.
