Barefield, Bulldogs overpower Cougars

After Silver Bluff's Lamass Barefield recorded his third foul in the first half, the Edisto Cougars thought they had his number.

Barefield, an all-state junior forward who transferred to Silver Bluff from Philadelphia at the beginning of the year, was held to just three points in the first half.

But the Bulldogs (20-5) unleashed a fired-up Lamass Barefield in the second half, as they overcame a nine-point deficit to defeat Edisto 75-68 in the first round of the South Carolina Class AA state playoffs at Silver Bluff.

Barefield scored 15 second-half points and hit a layup with 0:45 left in the game to help eliminate Edisto (9-13) from the playoffs.

A 17-4 run by Edisto put the Cougars ahead 46-37 midway through the third quarter. Then Silver Bluff went on a charge which saw the Bulldogs outscore Edisto 22-4 to take a 59-50 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Forward Warren Higgins connected on a three-pointer with 1:00 left to cut the Silver Bluff lead to 70-68, but Barefield's layup, along with free throws by Danny Green and Atuanya Heyward, sealed the victory for the Bulldogs.

Silver Bluff held the lead for most of the first half, but a tenacious full-court press by Edisto prevented the Bulldogs from pulling away. Guard Shanga Oliver nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Edisto a 34-33 lead at halftime.

"We were down early, but we stepped it up," Barefield said. "We started to pass through the press in the second half, instead of trying to dribble through it, and that helped us out."

Silver Bluff coach Hoover Johnson attributed the victory to defense and help from the bench.

"Our defensive intensity was the key for us in the second half," Johnson said. "Lamass got in foul trouble early, and our bench came in, and did a heck of a job. (Barefield) knew he had to be big in the second half, and he stepped up and did it."

Calhoun County, which thrashed Jasper County 93-46 in their first-round game, will play host to Silver Bluff in the second round on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
