Did anyone else perchance raise an eyebrow the other day over the conflicted actions of the Augusta Commission's Public Safety Committee?
Committee members voted, with little dissent, to hike 911 fees - charged on everyone's telephone bill - from $1.15 per month, per phone line, to $1.50. The extra cash, they claim, is needed to cover a shortfall in the 911 fund, which occurred when construction of the new 911 center ran more than $500,000 over budget.
Then, the committee members - who also serve on the full Commission - began gleefully studying how best to spend extra cash falling into the county's lap because the new Phinizy Road jail construction project is running $2.6 million under budget!
Could someone please introduce the Commission's right hand to its left?
