Pembroke ends Jaguars' season

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Clint Bryant's tough year is finally over.

Oliver Ottley, the Peach Belt Athletic Conference's second-leading scorer, got in early foul trouble and had only two points as UNC Pembroke eliminated Augusta State 65-51 at the PBAC Tournament on Tuesday.

"We aren't a very good basketball team," Bryant said, echoing his sentiments of the past two months. "We've got a good nucleus to build with. What we need to do between now and Oct. 15 is what's important. We know what we need to do. Now we just need to do it."

The Jaguars, the ninth seed, were 2-2 after ending a 10-game losing streak but finished at 8-19. Pembroke, which plays top-seeded and host Georgia College & State (22-4) on Thursday at 8 p.m., improved to 10-17.

Ottley, who was averaging 19.1 points, was hit with two fouls in the first two minutes.

The freshman guard re-entered the game late in the first half and quickly got another one.

He picked up his fourth on a charge with 9:02 left in the game and scored his only basket with 3:27 remaining.

"We were lucky to be around as late as we were," said Bryant, whose team trailed by only four points with 5:44 left. "Oliver scores two points and we're in this thing late. Then it got out of hand. Every time we got it close, they kept hitting big shots."

So where does Bryant go from here?

Augusta State loses seniors Brian Clernon, Lamont Johnson and Jeff Frazier, but started four freshmen on Tuesday.

The team's top three scorers - Ottley, Patrick Woodward and Leon Brunson - are freshmen, and Brian Calvin, the top rebounder, is a sophomore.

"We need to recruit a point guard and a guy who can score on the block," Bryant said. "I can't wait to see how this team responds. I can't wait to see how we bounce back. It's up to me and my coaches to get some more players in here, but preparing for next season starts (Tuesday) night."

Clernon, the only senior to start against Pembroke, said he hasn't decided whether or not to return to school next year or go back to his native Ireland, where he could play internationally.

He said he still has about a year of school remaining and that Bryant has offered him the student's assistant job.
