Area churches are ushering in the New Year with a service of testimonies, singing and preaching. Since about 1925, "watch meetings" have been held in churches, particularly African-American ones. It was considered a Christian duty and has since spread to various groups and denominations, according to The Folklore of American Holidays.

SPRINGFIELD BAPTIST CHURCH: 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. James Hogan.
BROWN GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH: 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Keysville, Ga., church, with the Rev. Clary Dishmond.
MOUNT VERNON BAPTIST CHURCH: 11 p.m. Tuesday.
SILVER BLUFF BAPTIST CHURCH: 10 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Olen Jessie.
NEW BERRY BAPTIST CHURCH: 10 p.m. Tuesday, with Eunice Dock.
