Area watch night services

Area churches are ushering in the New Year with a service of testimonies, singing and preaching. Since about 1925, "watch meetings" have been held in churches, particularly African-American ones. It was considered a Christian duty and has since spread to various groups and denominations, according to The Folklore of American Holidays.
