Pacers thump Morris while Lady Pacers also win

AIKEN - The USC-Aiken Pacers tipped off their 1996-97 regular season with a strong effort against Morris College (0-4), defeating the Hornets 113-85. The Lady Pacers evened their record at 1-1, edging Morris 70-68 Monday night at "The Courtyard."

In the men's game, junior forward Mark Hutcheson scored 24 points, 15 in a four minute span late in the first half to lead the Pacers. Freshman Corey Faggins added 20 points and four steals, while guard Kendrick Smith came off the bench to score 17.

Using a strong effort at the line, where the Pacers shot 85 percent (22 of 26), USC-Aiken was able to maintain a lead of at least 17 points throughout the second half.

The Pacers took the lead for good at 16:20 in the first half on a Faggins three-pointer. After leading 58-41 at the half, the Pacers extended their lead gradually for the remainder of the game, helped by solid free throw shooting and a 61 percent effort from the field.

Sophomore center Derek Moore, the Peach Belt Athletic Conference freshman of the year last season, played only six minutes in the second half because of foul trouble, and wound up with 12 points.
