Republican incumbent Rep. George DeLoach defeated Democrat challenger Hobson Chavous for the District 119 Georgia House seat Tuesday.
With all but the absentee votes in Richmond County counted, Mr. DeLoach won by 2,169 votes. Mr. Chavous, a former Richmond County commissioner, had 3,144 votes to Mr. DeLoach's 5,940 (61 percent).
Both had campaigned on a platform of education reform.
Mr. DeLoach, 55, a former mayor of Waynesboro, Ga., declared a funeral home and an apartment he owns in Hephzibah as his legal residence in 1994 and ran in the 119th District, defeating longtime legislator Mike Padgett.
Mr. Chavous, 59, was on Richmond County Commission six years and served as chairman twice. He lost his District 6 seat by 43 votes in a runoff with J.B. Powell in 1994.
