Burke grinds out win over ARC

Burke County gained 127 yards on the ground in the second half as Burke County beat ARC 14-3 at ARC stadium Friday night.

The Bears had two potential touchdowns called back because of penalties.

"We made too many mistakes," said first year head coach Mike Falleur. "Our defense has bailed us out so many times."

The first half was marred by turnovers and 110 yards in penalties. The only scoring was a 37 yard field goal by Chris Adams after Larry Lee took an Antwan Brown pitch and scampered for 42 yards in the second quarter. "We messed around in the first half. The defense really kept us in the game," said Bears quarterback Carson Wiggins.

Neither team could find the offense until the end of the third quarter when Gerald Loyd found the end zone from three yards out. After a Jason Sidell PAT the score was 7-3.

The Musketeers could only muster three offensive plays during the 3rd quarter. "The defense was out there all night," said Caputo.

The fourth quarter found both teams running three plays and punting.

"We weren't mentally ready to play," said ARC head coach Frank Caputo.

Wiggins had to punt from the 50 yard line his 49 yard punt back ARC up on the one yard line. "When we don't want them to have a return I angle the punt toward the sideline," said Wiggins.

Two plays later Larry Lee was hit on fumbled on this one yard line and Tori Jones recovered the loose ball.

Jeffery Bonner run through a tired Musketeer defensive line to seal the victory with 2:10 left in the game.

"It feels good to be 2-0 especially after what these kids have gone through the last couple of years," said Falleur.

The Bears play Thomson next Friday to try to go to 3-0. " I haven't even thought about Thomson yet," said Falluer.

The Musketeers fall to 0-2 and are off next week. "Maybe we can beat open," said Caputo.
