The owner of Smile Gas stores in Augusta says it has purchased 12 Texaco convenience stores in the metro area.
The acquisition closed Tuesday morning. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Boardman Petroleum, familiar to most in Augusta as Smile Gas, bought the 12 Texaco stores from Boardman Oil, an official of Boardman Oil confirmed. The two companies are owned by members of the same Augusta family, employees said.
At least one of the Texaco stores is very near an existing Smile Gas store, at Washington Road and Interstate 20. Five of 12 locations are anticipated to remain Texaco stations.
"The other seven would be branded Smile Gas," said Stephani McGhee, speaking for Boardman Petroleum on Wednesday, although she said she did not know which stores would be converted.
Clay Boardman, president of the company, was out of town and unavailable for comment Wednesday, a spokeswoman said.
The acquisition represents a reduction in operations for Texaco distributor Boardman Oil, in business since 1904, one manager said. Boardman Oil now owns two Texaco stores and four full-service stations, said Mike Rowe, general manager.
About 70 employees were transferred to Boardman Petroleum, Ms. McGhee said.
Some changes are planned for the newly acquired Texaco convenience stores, she said.
"I know we're going to do some remodeling, because our (Smile Gas) sites involve a lot of landscaping," she said.
Boardman Petroleum, the acquiring company, operates 79 locations in five states under the names Smile Gas, Fuel City, Texaco, Exxon, Phillips, and Citgo.
The company said it employs 815 people, about 460 in the metro Augusta area.
