Augusta State's season of paybacks continued Friday evening.
Five Jaguars scored in double digits as they rolled to an 84-77 win over Tusculum at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
With the win over the Pioneers, Augusta State avenged a six-point road loss earlier this month. After evening the score with Paine two weeks ago, the Jaguars now own their first two-game winning streak of the season.
"We've lost a lot of games we feel like we should have won," senior point guard Karim Telfer said. "Our game is to not look back, but look forward. We're 4-5 now and we're trying to get back to .500 and then move on from there."
"I was proud of our team, because this is a team we lost to and we don't want to get swept," coach Dip Metress said.
Tyrekus Bowman put on an air show with a team-high 18 points on five dunks. He added eight rebounds, five steals and five blocks, impressing his coach and his point guard.
"It's a health thing," Metress said. "When he's healthy, he's pretty good. He owned the paint the last 12 minutes of the game."
Telfer said: " He brings another kind of energy. When he's going, we're jumping. We're a great team when he's playing like that."
Jason Mills added 16 points, while Matt Scott chipped in with 13, Dean Brebner had 12 and Telfer 11. Augusta State shot 46 percent from the field and dished out 17 assists against a season-low six turnovers.
"Against a good team like that, you've got to take care of the ball," said Metress, whose team entered the contest last in the Peach Belt in turnover margin. "Turnovers have been a problem for us."
Augusta State couldn't afford any handouts in a game that went back-and-forth for 32 minutes. The Jaguars finally created some separation with a 10-0 run capped by 3-pointers from Telfer and Mills.
Bowman's steal and breakway dunk with 2 minutes remaining gave Augusta State some breathing room at 79-71.
Metress said his team's ability to get the ball in the paint to Bowman and Brebner helped open up the floor for a season-high in points.
"We were able to get the ball inside and score," Metress said. "That was our game plan. We're trying to get the ball inside more and open things up for everybody else."
With Mills now an integral part of the lineup after sitting out the first semester, and the rest of the team beginning to click, Telfer believes Augusta State's ready to take off.
"We have all the pieces we need to be a great team," he said. "Everybody's back. We're just looking forward to getting some wins."
