 Area New Year's eve celebrations

With state liquor laws knocking bars out of contention for New Year's Eve dollars, hotels and restaurants, which are allowed Sunday liquor licenses, are stepping in to take up the slack.

``That's why we're doing this,'' said Don Davis, manager at Half-Shell Harry's, a restaurant that opened in October in the National Hills shopping center on Washington Road. Half-Shell Harry's is planning a party with a seafood and prime rib buffet, dancing, live music, unlimited champagne and draft beer and a late-night breakfast buffet for $99 per couple.

``We're selling tickets in advance because we only have 40 tables and we don't want to overcrowd. But I still think we'll have 120-140 people,'' Mr. Davis said.

Better call ahead if you're planning to go out for New Year's Eve. Applebee's and other restaurants that don't normally take reservations are advising customers to make them.

Here's a list of New Year's Eve events that area establishments are planning:

Public Parties

AMERICAN LEGION NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY: American Legion Post 63 will hold a party featuring a steak dinner and live music by the Cross Roads Band. Tickets are $20. For more information, call 733-9387.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR ALL: Presented by the Augusta/Richmond County hospitality industry, 7 p.m. until, at Regency Mall. See Page 2 for details. Tickets are $25 and available at the Honky Tonk, Kokopelli's, Goodfella's, Tommy's Place and the Fishbowl Lounge. Call 863-2258.

CAFE DU TEAU: The Cafe du Teau's annual New Year's bash will include a five-course meal at $58 per person (not including tax) and live jazz by Buzz Clifford. Reservations are recommended. For more information, call 733-3505.

HALF-SHELL HARRY'S: Half-Shell Harry's is planning a party with a seafood and prime rib buffet from 7:30 to 11 p.m., a breakfast buffet starting at 12:30 a.m., a champagne fountain and unlimited draft beer, dancing and music by Wayne Capp. Tickets are $99 a couple. Call 729-6696.

Hotels

THE PARTRIDGE INN: The Partridge Inn is offering a New Year's Eve couple package that includes one night's stay, dinner and dancing, music by All That Jazz, a champagne toast at midnight, party favors and a breakfast buffet on New Year's Day. The price is $286. For more information, call 737-8888.

THE RAMADA PLAZA: The Ramada at 640 Broad St. is offering a package that includes dinner buffet, music by the Desert Wind Band, a champagne toast, drink tickets, a midnight breakfast buffet and an overnight stay.

Tickets are $159.95 a couple, $139 without the hotel room. For more information, call 722-5541.

  The Lee Griffin Band will be entertaining those who purchase the New Year's Eve Ballroom package at the Sheraton Augusta Hotel.

THE SHERATON AUGUSTA HOTEL: The package at the Sheraton Augusta Hotel, 2651 Perimeter Parkway, includes hors d'oeuvres, drink tickets, music, a champagne toast, balloon drop at midnight and an overnight room with bottle of champagne and breakfast for two.

The package costs $179 per couple, $229 for a whirlpool suite. The special ballroom package includes everything above as well as a dinner buffet, music by the Lee Griffin Band, a dessert buffet and sparkling cake at midnight. Ballroom packages are $249 a couple, $319 for a whirlpool suite. For more information, call 855-8100.

RADISSON RIVERFRONT HOTEL AUGUSTA: The Radisson at 2 10th St. offers a package that includes an hors d'oeuvre hour with drinks, music by Equation, dancing, a dinner buffet, a champagne toast at midnight, a deluxe suite and breakfast. The cost is $229 a couple. For more information, call 722-8900.
