Player may shine at Iowa State

Web posted December 16, 1997

From Staff Reports

Former Richmond Academy basketball player Ty Shine's road to college basketball may end this week when the 6-foot point guard suits up for Iowa State, according to The Gazette of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Shine was enrolled at Milford (Conn.) Prep until recently and was being recruited by Iowa State, Cincinnati, Clemson, Maryland, Michigan and Tulane. He was attending Milford because he did not have a qualifying ACT test score as a prep senior last season at Cincinnati's Withrow High. Shine made a qualifying score in October. Shine played at ARC through his junior season, 1995-96, before transferring to Withrow to try and improve his grades.

Iowa State officials would not comment about Shine on Monday since they are awaiting transcripts from Milford. Shine was in Augusta on Monday, but did not return a phone message on Monday night.

Shine had been rumored to be making the unusual mid-season transfer for a couple of weeks. Iowa State coach Tim Floyd is desperately seeking a point guard to stand up to Big 12 Conference competition after junior college signee C.J. Burton was declared ineligible. Charles Williams, who is under a 22-game suspension at Cincinnati by the NCAA, was considering a transfer to Iowa State, where he could play immediately for the remainder of this year, his senior season. However, Barbara Shine, Ty's mother, called Iowa State's Floyd last weekend and said her son was coming to Ames, Iowa.

Shine could suit up for the Cyclones (4-3) by Saturday when they play Alaska-Anchorage in the ISU Holiday Classic. Iowa State's first semester ends Friday and Shine will be eligible the next day if the transcript is accepted and he's enrolled for second semester. Big 12 play begins in January.
