Before work even started on The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation in mid-February 2001, its owners promised the Nicklaus-Design golf course would be a special one.

When the Aiken course opened July 22, 2002, golfers agreed. Now, so does the most-read golf publication in the country.
The January issue of Golf Digest magazine, which hit newsstands this week, ranks The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation 10th among new private courses in the country for 2003.
You might notice a slight accuracy problem - The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation opened in 2002, not 2003.
According to the magazine, courses eligible for its America's Best New Courses list (there are also categories for best new affordable public course and best new upscale public course) were judged between May 1, 2002 and April 30, 2003.
"We're definitely excited," said The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation head pro Noel Pack. "It's something we were hoping would happen and we had set our sights for. It was a great day at the course when we found out about it because of all the doors this is going to open up for us."
The magazine's panel judged candidates on five criteria: shot values, design variety, memorability, aesthetics and resistance to scoring.
Bonus points were awarded to courses that allowed walking. The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation has no restrictions against walking by members.
"That seems to be quite important to them," Pack said of the magazine. "It looked like all the courses that were ranked allow walking. I think it's coming back to the way the game used to be played."
The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation is the first course in the Augusta and Aiken area to be created by Nicklaus Design, which is headed by six-time Masters Tournament champion Jack Nicklaus. It's not a Nicklaus Signature course, which means Jack Nicklaus did not design the course. Rather, his design team did.
The Reserve Club is owned by Woodside Golf, which is not affiliated with the two 18-hole courses at nearby Woodside Plantation.
