ATLANTA - With the 2005 season in the record books, the final Associated Press high school football poll reflects the surprising changes that take place during the playoffs.
Class AAA stands out as the biggest surprise as Carrollton - the consistent No. 1 throughout the season - failed to even remain ranked while Peach County moved from No. 10 to No. 1, defeating sleeper Dougherty 35-14 for the championship. Shaw slipped one position to No. 3 as Jefferson County, Thomson and McNair exit the rankings. The newcomers are No. 4 LaGrange, No. 5 Stephens County, No. 7 Hart County and No. 8 Flowery Branch.
Lincoln County qualifies as the second biggest surprise moving from No. 9 to No. 1 with a convincing 25-0 Class A championship win over Washington-Wilkes. No. 3 Bowdon fell two slots with McIntosh County Academy, Portal and Turner County falling from the ranked. The three new teams are No. 6 Hawkinsville, No. 7 Twiggs County and No. 8 Savannah Country Day.
In Class AA, Charlton County moves up from No. 6 to the champion slot edging out Calhoun 27-21. No. 3 Greene County moves up one but Vidalia, Greater Atlanta Christian and Laney exit. With respectable post-season showings, No. 6 Cook, No. 8 Macon County and No. 10 Darlington close out in the rankings.
The top two in Class AAAA flip-flopped with Statesboro crowned champion with a narrow 13-10 win over Northside-Warner Robins. No. 3 Griffin jumped four positions as four teams in the middle positions - Tucker, Warner Robins, Lee County and Creekside - did not perform well enough to remain. New to the final poll are No. 4 Baldwin, No. 7 Dalton, No. 9 Southwest DeKalb and No. 10 Douglas County.
With little surprise or doubt, Lowndes repeats as Class AAAAA champion with a dominating 49-7 win over previously undefeated Brookwood. No. 3 Dacula moves up two notches as former No. 1 Camden County falls to No. 6. Harrison, South Cobb and Riverdale exit and No. 7 Starr's Mill, No. 8 Central Gwinnett and No. 9 Roswell enter.
