Larry Harley is not the sentimental type when it comes to his hole-in-ones, which number three after his latest, at Harlem's Three Oaks Golf Course.
You surely won't find any of the balls he used in a display case in his Dearing, Ga., home.
"People ask, 'Did you save the ball?' I don't," the 53-year-old Harley said.
His past two aces have come on the 140-yard second hole at Three Oaks, so Harley didn't even put the balls in his bag for safekeeping at the time.
"It was only my second hole, so I played on through the round with them," Harley said. "I'm not one that carries on because I did something like that."
Harley said he doesn't know what happened to any of the balls. He likely continued playing with them over the next couple of rounds before putting them in the five-gallon bucket where he and his wife, Mona, keep their practice balls at home.
"We live out in the country and have a large pasture and hit them out there," he said. "It's probably out there."
When the Harleys hit practice balls, they have a gallery. Their Labrador Retrievers, Taz and Cletis.
"They love to chase the balls," he said. "I hit and they go for it. They want us to go out and hit all the time."
"Larry can't even sneak out of the house with a golf club because they see him and they know, right off the bat," Mona Harley said. "They get in front of him and jump up and down and bark and go crazy until he finally hits one out there. It's neat."
Larry Harley's first ace came more than 20 years ago on the 16th hole at Ridge Spring, S.C.'s Bogeyville Golf Club. His second came on No. 2 at Three Oaks "two or three" years ago, which he followed in October with the latest.
"I never really think about it," he said. "I'm not sitting there trying to make one. If the yardage is good and I feel comfortable, I will try to pin the ball, but I'm not necessarily trying to ace the hole."
Larry Harley, a six-handicapper, taught his wife the game four years ago. They are regulars on the course every weekend.
"We play every Saturday and Sunday unless it's pouring rain and really cold," he said. "We've been out here before and the sleet hits us in the face going down No. 10."
Currently, an average weekend day is 36 holes. In the spring, when the days are longer, they usually play three 18-hole rounds per weekend day.
"We try to get in all we can," Larry Harley said. "People are surprised when we tell them we play 54 holes. We have passed people twice on the course. They just smile and wave."
"We do it because we just dearly enjoy the game. It wouldn't have bothered me if I hadn't made a hole-in-one. I just love the game."
Mona Harley has picked up the game so quickly that she's already playing from the men's tee at Three Oaks. But she doesn't have a hole-in-one yet.
"I'd like to have one, but if it doesn't happen, there's not much I can do about it,'' she said.
