Augusta Christian couldn't stop Augusta Prep junior Jim Hull on Tuesday night. The Lions didn't have to for the victory.
"We knew he was going to score his points," Augusta Christian boys basketball coach Marty Griffin said. "He's too good not to score."
Hull, averaging more than 30 points per game this season, matched his personal best with a game-high 43 in front of a home crowd against Augusta Prep's in-county rival. It still wasn't enough to keep Augusta Christian from rolling to a 78-64 win.
It was only the Lions' second game of the year, but they appeared to be in mid-season form. They shot 52.6 percent from the field, including an 11-for-16 stretch where they scored 26 points during the second quarter.
"We're still not in basketball shape, but I was real pleased with the intensity level tonight," Griffin said. "It was good we went up big in the first half, because I knew Augusta Prep was still going to make a run."
After trailing by 22 points with a minute left in the third quarter, Augusta Prep launched a high-scoring rally.
The Cavaliers' 11-2 run in the fourth quarter, and Hull's free throw with 2:05 left made it a 10-point game, but that's as close as the Lions would allow.
