Msgt. Cleonard Pittman Sr.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Master Sergeant Cleonard G. "Pop" Pittman Sr., U.S. Army Retired, age 82, of Augusta, passed away Monday, December 3, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Thomas L. King Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Harrell officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Members of Battery "A" 214 CAA Battalion Association and the 878th Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy) Georgia Army National Guard will serve as honorary pallbearers. MSgt. Pittman was a decorated Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He joined the Georgia Army National Guard as a private in November 1940, and entered active duty with the 250th CAA Battalion from Augusta. During World War II, he served in North Africa and the European Theatre. After his tour of duty ended in September 1945, he enlisted in Augustas 878th Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy), Georgia Army National Guard, where he served as a senior non-commissioned officer and civil service technician until his retirement in 1978, after 40 years of distinguished military service. MSgt. Pittman was affectionately called "Pop" by the officers with whom he served and the enlisted soldiers he led, coached and mentored. During his spare time, he enjoyed serving as a volunteer with the local Boys Club. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Powell Pittman; three sons, Lt. Col. Cleonard G. "Sonny" Pittman Jr., Trent William Pittman, and Brent Lamar Pittman, Augusta; one daughter, Nancy Pittman Aldridge, Gainesville; one grandson and six granddaughters. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30904. Thomas L.
