North Augustan yet to see any of aces

Lark Jones knows this might sound a little greedy, especially coming from someone with three holes-in-ones.

But the next time, if there is one, he'd like to see his ball go in the hole.

All of the North Augusta mayor's aces have come on the uphill sixth hole at North Augusta Country Club, his home course. The latest happened earlier this month on the 150-yard hole with a 7-iron shot. The witness, Eric Wiggins, "got more excited than I did," Jones said.

The sixth has a "blind" green, which means golfers can't see the putting surface from the tee.

"That's the sad thing about it," Jones said. "That's pretty frustrating. It's sort of like the excitement level goes down when you don't get to see it go in."

Jones really wishes he'd seen his latest ace because he knows where his ball hit on the undulating green and where the pin was.

"The shot was left of the pin and it must have rolled up a tier and then back down and into the hole which was in the right-front of the green," Jones said.

"It was a shot made for YouTube," he said. "If I'd just had a cameraman at the top of the hill ..."

After taking up golf seriously at age 12, the 58-year-old Jones didn't make his first ace until his early 50s, in the early 2000s. The second one came in October of 2006.

"He waited a long time; we were kind of worried," said Lark's brother, Lance Jones, one of the top golfers in the area.

Even Lark's son, 30-year-old Tyler, made a hole-in-one before he did. Tyler was in high school at the time.

"Fortunately, he wanted to stay in the will, so he never rubbed it in," Jones said.

The timing of the aces -- three in the past six years -- is surprising because the former 8-handicapper doesn't shoot as many low scores as he once did. He thinks it has something to do with his political position.

"The more I'm mayor, the higher my handicap gets," said Jones, whose third term expires in 2009.

Jones is grateful for the order of his aces. The first one was witnessed by his brother Lance. The second ace didn't have a witness, so it wasn't considered official.

"I went out there by myself after work to see if I could get in nine holes," Jones said, referring to the second ace. "I got to the sixth hole and it was getting dark. The pin was in the back and I looked all over behind the green for the ball. Out of desperation I looked in the hole and there it was.

"I had no witness, no nothing. It would have been a nightmare if my first one had been without a witness."

After he made the first ace, Jones said it "took the pressure off, like when Phil Mickelson won his first Masters," Jones said.

"If you're a serious golfer, your career is not complete unless you have a hole-in-one," he said. "It really haunts you when you talk to guys who play only a few times a year and they made one long before you do. It's like Dan Marino not having a Super Bowl ring or Kevin Garnett not having an NBA title."

To celebrate the ace, Jones said he told everybody in his group that he would throw them a party.

"That was just Eric Wiggins," Jones said with a laugh. "I still owe he and his wife a dinner, and we will do it."

POPULAR PLAYING PARTNER: Wiggins, who witnessed Jones' latest ace, must be a good-luck charm. He was also a witness when Kevin Ratcliffe aced North Augusta Country's Club's 12th hole this summer. It was Ratcliffe's second ace on that hole in 28 days. The other witnesses were David Wanninger and Ben Lown.
