Warren County coach Lee Hutto hopes he's already made his worst call in Friday's matchup with Emanuel County Institute in the Georgia High School Association Class A quarterfinals.
The teams flipped a coin to decide the home field since, as champions of their respective regions, they were both top seeds. The Bulldogs (11-0) are the top-ranked team in Class A.
Hutto drove 30 minutes from Warrenton, Ga., to the Dollar General in Wrens, Ga. He met up with ECI coach Milan Turner and another Bulldogs assistant in the store's parking lot.
Hutto called tails at about 9:15 Saturday morning.
"It came up heads," he said.
EARLY READ: The Screaming Devils (10-2) face a powerful offense this week.
ECI beat Dooly County 35-0 on Friday. The Bulldogs have scored at least 28 points in every game this year. They've cracked the 40-point mark another seven times.
Junior runner Washaun Ealey (5-11, 205) set the all-time state record for touchdowns with four scores Friday night. He has 48 on the year, eclipsing the likes of Charles Grant , Darius Walker and Herschel Walker .
Ealey has run for 2,171 yards.
"He's a heck of a player but they've got another runner that's a heck of a player, too." Hutto said.
TWIN KILLERS: Lincoln County (11-1) moved on with a 19-7 win at Bremen. This week's test for the road warriors is against Wilcox County in Rochelle, Ga.
The Patriots (11-1) may be one of the top four teams in Class A. They are led by tremendous athletes in twins Alphonzo and Lorenzo Dennard . They also picked up Hawkinsville transfer David Grace to boost what was already a strong running game.
Lorenzo's the quarterback. Alphonzo, who has scholarship offers from Alabama and Clemson, is a cornerback who also makes his share of big plays at receiver.
SWAGGER ISSUE: Jefferson County coach J.B. Arnold couldn't help but wonder if his team came into Friday's road loss at Dublin feeling a little too bold.
Jefferson County's 37-17 win in a preseason scrimmage was the culprit. Its first-team led Dublin 23-10 when all the starters for the teams left the field.
"We beat Dublin in the jamboree and kind of cruised in with an attitude," Arnold said. "When you do that kind of stuff and you've got 15- to 18-year-old kids you are going to get a sense of relaxing. We told our kids all week this is Dublin's time of year. Winning games like this is what Dublin does. This is their time. That's what we've got to learn to do. I thought that was the big key more than anything else."
The Warriors had all of their points and 174 of their 230 yards in the second half.
"We felt all year long what we run and what we do works," Arnold said. "We just didn't execute. But I'm proud our kids did not fold. We came out and made it a battle in the second half."
GOOD KNIGHT: A 26-0 loss to Northside in Warner Robins ended Evans' best season since 1995. It also ended the first year of a big experiment by coach Marty Jackson called the Knights of the Roundtable.
It's a mascot-friendly leadership committee that Jackson set up last January. The specially chosen football players help make team decisions, including punishments for those who break team rules.
"It's the first time I've ever really given my players ownership of the team, and it's not going to be the last time," Jackson said.
The roundtable may not have been the only reason for Evans' 6-0 start, second-place finish in Region 3-AAAA and 9-3 overall record with an appearance in the second round of the state playoffs, but Jackson said it helped.
"We didn't have any meetings of the Knights of the Roundtable in the last four weeks of the year," he said. "After the Brunswick game we never really met again because we didn't have to. We had a team."
