Charges added in ex-principal's case

AIKEN --- The State Law Enforcement Division filed additional charges Tuesday against a former Aiken County school administrator accused of molesting students dating back to the 1970s.

Stephen Eubanks, of North Augusta, surrendered to police after learning of the nine new charges. So far, he faces 14 charges related to the alleged sexual abuse of five students spanning three decades.

The latest charges include two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, engaging a child for sexual performance, two counts of lewd act on a child younger than 16, kidnapping, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and enticing an enrolled child from school.

The 67-year-old man, with his hands clasped in front of him, listened Tuesday as the magistrate judge denied him bond, telling Mr. Eubanks that although he wasn't a flight risk the judge considered him a "danger to the community."

The new charges involve two males and one female who reported the allegations to a toll-free hot line SLED set up last month.

"The hot line is still active," SLED spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said. "We continue to encourage folks to use this number."

She would not say how many calls the hot line has received.

According to new arrest warrants, Mr. Eubanks is accused of sexual acts involving a 14-year-old boy at Mr. Eubanks' home between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 1993, and a year before, when the boy was 13. He also gave the child alcoholic beverages and marijuana, SLED said.

Another arrest warrant accuses Mr. Eubanks of engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old boy at his former home in the 100 block of Argyle Avenue in North Augusta and at Paul Knox Junior High School, now Paul Knox Middle School, where he was principal in the late 1970s.

A statement from SLED accuses Mr. Eubanks of taking that same boy to several rest areas off Interstate 20 in Aiken County in 1977 and forcing him into situations with unknown adult men.

In another arrest warrant, Mr. Eubanks is accused of engaging in sexual acts with a 15-year-old girl in his car near Two Notch Road and Celeste Avenue.

Mr. Eubanks was arrested by SLED agents Oct. 21 at his home on Belair Road on charges of lewd act on a child younger than 16, exposing private parts, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of enticing children from school.

Those charges involve a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl who also were students at North Augusta High and Paul Knox Junior High in the late 1970s.

According to the Aiken County Public School District, Mr. Eubanks was an assistant principal at North Augusta High from 1971-76. He was then principal at the junior high school until he transferred to the Georgetown County School District in 1978. He later served as an administrator in Lancaster County.

No charges have been filed against Mr. Eubanks in the other two counties.

SLED began its investigation Sept. 19 at the request of the North Augusta Department of Public Safety.

North Augusta Detective Tim Thornton said last month that the case was sent to SLED because it was "somewhat connected to an earlier (SLED) investigation" of Edward Meloan, who was arrested in July 2007 on charges of molesting a 12-year-old boy in the 1970s.
