Egekeze's big kick moves Terrapins into first place

Reviewing and previewing college football:

WHO'S HOT

Obi Egekeze: The former Westside High School kicker nailed his second game-winning field goal in three weeks -- this time to help Maryland defeat North Carolina. Egekeze, who helped the Terrapins jump into the Atlantic Coast Conference Atlantic Division lead, is 14-for-21 on field-goal attempts and 25-for-25 on extra-point tries.

WHO'S NOT

Troy: The Trojans led No. 18 LSU by 28 in the second half and were up 31-10 entering the fourth quarter. Then Troy pulled off the biggest choke job this season. Bad defense, along with a pair of questionable coaching decisions (going for it twice on fourth down), led to the Tigers scoring 30 fourth-quarter points in a shocking comeback.

BOWL WATCH

Web sites sportsline.com and espn.com (which features two writers, Mark Schlabach and Bruce Feldman ) have differing opinions on where they believe the four local teams will be playing their bowl games. Here's what they say:

- Georgia: vs. Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl (sportsline.com); vs. Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl (Schlabach); vs. Ohio State in the Capital One Bowl (Feldman).

- Georgia Tech: vs. Arizona in the Emerald Bowl (sportsline.com); vs. Pittsburgh in the Meineke Car Care Bowl (Schlabach); vs. Boise State in the Humanitarian Bowl (Feldman).

- South Carolina: vs. Iowa in the Outback Bowl (sportsline.com); vs. Michigan State in the Outback Bowl (Feldman and Schlabach).

- Clemson: no bowl projections.

RANKING THE BIG FOUR

1. Georgia (9-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference). Running back Knowshon Moreno is tied for fourth with Frank Sinkwich on the school's career rushing touchdown list with 29. Herschel Walker is the all-time leader with 49.

2. Georgia Tech (7-3, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). With 1,056 yards, sophomore Jonathan Dwyer became the 10th rusher in school history to reach 1,000 yards in a season.

3. South Carolina (7-4, 4-4 SEC). Gators, and quarterback Tim Tebow , still have the Gamecocks' number. The good news: This time Tebow only scored three touchdowns after scoring seven against South Carolina a year ago.

4. Clemson (5-5, 3-4 ACC). James Davis needs 268 rushing yards in the next two games to become the Tigers' all-time leading rushers, surpassing Raymond Priester (3,966 yards).

WHAT'S NEXT

- Miami at Georgia Tech, 7:30 p.m. Thursday (ESPN)

- Clemson at Virginia, noon Saturday (CBS-Ch. 12)

THIS WEEK'S STORY LINES

Clemson: Tigers facing ACC's lowest scoring offense in Virginia.
