Finch carrying the load

Evans (9-3) is in the second round of the Georgia High School Association state playoffs for the first time since 2000. The Knights have already secured their program's second-best win total in the past 20 years. Their nine wins to this point are only topped by the 1995 team that finished 10-2.

They can thank former Greenbrier assistant Mickey Derrick 's offensive line and a sophomore's legs for getting them there. The Knights' 35-16 win against Lee County (2-9) was keyed by the rushing efforts of young Jonathan Finch .

Finch scored three times, gaining 106 yards on 20 carries against the Trojans.

Evans leaned on a rushing attack by committee earlier in the season. Finch's emergence has altered Evans' offense.

"He has kind of stepped up and it gives us the ability to have all our big-play guys on the field," Evans coach Marty Jackson said. "That's Finch in the backfield. Trey Henderson and Jonathan Nicely out wide with David Smith or Tevin Nelson . Brandon McCladdie . That's all five of our speed guys on the field at the same time who can really motor. Defenses have to respect that."

Finch, a 5-foot-7 sophomore, has run for 194 yards and scored four times his past two games.

"I just practiced hard and kept playing hard when I got in there," Finch said. "The coaches then gave me a shot to earn the spot."

JOY IN JEFFERSON: When Jefferson County quarterback Barry Bostic lost a fumble on his team's first drive, it appeared Lady Luck was preparing to slap the Warriors in the face once again in the state playoffs.

But something strange happened. That was the Warriors' defense taking control of the game, sparking the team to a 13-0, first-round Class AA win.

Early County (8-3) had nothing to show for its three trips inside the red zone. The Bobcats also went 0-for-5 on fourth down

It appeared Early County would cut into the 13-point lead in the third quarter. The Bobcats had set themselves up nicely with a first-and-goal at the 1.

That only set the stage for the biggest goal-line stand in school history.

Early County found no room on three consecutive runs up the gut. Quarterback Michael Perry fumbled the snap on fourth down and fell on the loose ball.

"Our kids just played awesome tonight," Jefferson County coach J.B. Arnold said. "Especially on the defensive side of the ball. That's been our heart and soul."

The Warriors (8-2-1) go on the road to face a Dublin team it routed in a preseason scrimmage.

ODD: Laney (6-4) finished off a turbulent year in the wee hours Saturday morning.

Laney's first-round exit after a 24-0 setback in Thomasville was the first time the school did not win at least one state playoff game since 2001.

The Wildcats had their chances at the home of the Region 1-AA champions. Coach Lemuel Lackey said the team drove inside the 30 four times with a daring attitude.

Laney converted all three of its fourth-down attempts.

"I told the guys on the way down we were going all in," Lackey said. "I had all my poker chips pushed to the center of the table.

"We were going to give it all we had to win that game."

Those forays were halted on downs three times. The other drive was cut short by one of the team's three interceptions at the Thomasville 11.

"It was what I said all year," Lackey said. "Just us not being consistent on offense. We did do some good things offensively."

The Wildcats were 6-1 at one point this year, only to lose their final three games of the season.
