The Augusta State University Literacy Center recently received a makeover.
Students from Westminster Schools volunteered to spruce up the lawn and paint murals as a part of their service to the community project.
"We look for organizations that need help that we can provide," said science teacher Dwight Redick. "The purpose is not only to help the organization or to have our students aware of the needs of the community, it's also a part of our Christian spirit."
Paulette Harris, the center's director of the center, said the literacy center students will like the improvements.
"They'll be excited," Dr. Harris said. "When they see the new murals, they will be so delighted."
The center offers reading instruction to kindergartners through adults, tutoring more than 1,000 people each month.
Westminster students raked leaves and planted flowers while others painted colorful murals with nature scenes of flowers and butterflies on the white walls inside the building.
Mr. Redick said his students will benefit from the project as much as the literacy center's clients.
"We live in such an isolated environment where we don't worry about too much," he said. "Providing these services allows them to see some people have needs, and they feel a need to help them."
Melissa Walters, 16, helped paint one of the murals.
"I hope it helps the kids enjoy their classes more," she said. "Hopefully, it makes it easier for them to learn because the environment is more friendly and they don't dread coming in here."
Melissa said she has learned more about the area.
"I didn't know this place existed," she said. "I'm learning more about the community. You learn about the different people around us and the different needs in the community."
