NEW THIS WEEK

QUANTUM OF SOLACE ( **, PG-13) Starts out with a thrilling chase through northern Italy that's one of the film's few highlights. But this is a very slight Bond movie, and it feels especially so compared to Casino Royale, easily one of the best of the long-running series. Augusta Exchange, Evans, Aiken

ONGOING

APPALOOSA ( ***, R): Lawmen take on a tough rancher. Aiken

BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA ( **1/2, PG): A pampered pooch (voiced by Drew Barrymore) gets stranded in Mexico. Evans, ends today in Aiken, Augusta Exchange

CHANGELING ( **, R) Clint Eastwood returns to the director's chair. Angelina Jolie stars as the distraught mother of a 9-year-old boy who is kidnapped in 1920s Los Angeles. Augusta Exchange, Evans, Aiken

CITY OF EMBER ( **, PG): A post-apocalyptic parable based on Jeanne Duprau's children's novel and brought to the screen with visual inventiveness by Monster House director Gil Kenan. But even with Bill Murray as the deliciously duplicitous mayor, it's hard to get emotionally invested. Masters

THE DARK KNIGHT ( ***, PG-13): The caped crusader (Christian Bale) teams up with police Lt. Gordon (Gary Oldman) and a new D.A. (Aaron Eckhart) to take on the Joker (Heath Ledger in his final film). Masters

WALL-E (G): A robot discovers his calling in this Pixar film. Masters

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO ( **, R) Writer-director Kevin Smith pushes the R-rating to its limits with this raunchy comedy. Augusta Exchange, Evans

ENDING TODAY

THE EXPRESS ( ***, PG): A drama based on the life of Syracuse University football star Ernie Davis. Masters
