Not one patron at Augusta's main library Wednesday afternoon tapped into the treasure hidden between encyclopedias and directories behind the reference desk.
The city's 93-page proposed 2009 budget, filled with information about service cuts and tax increases, is kept behind the reference desk at the main library on Greene Street. But few look, said Nancy Carver, the library's head of public service.
"Most view it online, but some people come in to view it, because they prefer holding it in their hands and reading it rather than viewing it on a computer."
City Administrator Fred Russell proposed the budget Oct. 21. Later that week, one resident was eager to view it at the library, Mrs. Carver said.
"She let us know that it had been released, and she wanted to find it here," she said. "That next Monday they finally got it placed here."
Those interested in viewing the library's city budget need a picture ID to view it at the library, Mrs. Carver said. The budget copy cannot be checked out.
The city began making its budget available at the library more than five years ago, said Tim Schrorer, city assistant finance director.
"It's another venue for the public to have access," he said.
Commissioners will meet Tuesday to vote on the budget.
The reference desk could get more traffic once the budget is approved, Mrs. Carver said.
"If there's controversy or a lot of media coverage, I think more people will come in and look at it," she said.
