Greenbrier ended tough season on rousing high note

Greenbrier's final football game last week was so good quarterback Ben Turner watched it on film twice on Saturday.

In a 59-57 win over Redan, Greenbrier trailed 31-7 at the half and 38-7 shortly after intermission.

The comeback, worthy of its own movie script, began on the next series and ended with Tyler Griffin 's 30-yard field goal on the final play.

In between, the Wolfpack recovered three onsides kicks, successfully pulled off a fake-spike play (think Dan Marino against the New York Jets in 1994) and watched Redan extend the game with a roughing-the-kicker penalty in the final seconds.

"There was something in the air, blowing through the trees ... it was magical," first-year coach Brian Smith said.

Said Turner, "It was pretty much the best game I ever played in."

Greenbrier (2-8) won for the first time since Sept. 5 and earned its first win in the Atlanta-centric Region 2-AAAAA. The Wolfpack had lost the previous six games in the region by a combined 268-55.

"(The win) says a lot about the character of our guys," Smith said. "We've played with heart all year, and our message was to just keep playing, keep playing."

MUSKETEERS ON THE MEND: Richmond Academy will be without two of its top players in its playoff opener against Region 4-AAAA champion North Clayton.

Leading rusher Jerrel Anderson (587 yards, nine TDs) and leading pass-rusher Morgan Steers (seven sacks) were both injured in practice this week.

Anderson broke his hand while Steers has a leg injury.

A loss to North Clayton would send Richmond Academy into the off-season with a three-game losing streak. But coach Chris Hughes isn't worried about the possibility of losing momentum. The Musketeers, who entered the season on a 17-game losing skid, are in the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.

"Right now we're looking at (this season) to springboard us to bigger and better things next year," Hughes said. "We were expected to improve this year, and I think we've exceeded all our expectations."

MODEL EFFICIENCY: Burke County running back Brandon Brown touched the ball five times in a 40-15 win over West Laurens. Yet he managed 201 yards of offense (181 rushing, 20 receiving) and two touchdowns. Burke County shoots for its first playoff win since 2000 (13-7 over Jones County) Friday at home against Mary Persons.

THREE HONORED: North Augusta coach Dan Pippin , Midland Valley coach Rick Knight and Blackville-Hilda running back Joe Thomas were recently honored by the South Carolina Football Coaches Association.

They were named to the Palmetto Champions All-Star Team, which consists of 25 players and 10 coaches from across South Carolina.

The honorees will be recognized Dec. 4 at a banquet in Columbia.

PANTHERS SET MARK: Three Glascock County running backs rushed for more than 1,100 yards this season.

Montavious Myricks (1,290), Tavaris Neal (1,195) and Dontavais Gibson (1,103) all surpassed the school's previous single-season rushing record of 1,085 yards.

The Panthers finished their non-region schedule 8-2.

THIS AND THAT: A win over Social Circle this week means Lincoln County's Larry Campbell would coach his 500th game in the second round of the Class A playoffs. His career record is up to 423-72-3. ... Strom Thurmond's defense (six shutouts, giving up 5.9 points per game) next meets Southside, which scored 74 points in its first-round Class AA win. ... Barnwell running back Colby Carter earned his second 300-yard game when he rushed for 343 yards in the Warhorses' 56-48 playoff-opening win over Burke
