Quilters sew up awards

Nearly 100 colorful quilted pieces will be on display through the end of November at the Aiken County Historical Museum.

"There are some interesting pieces," said Elliott Levy, the museum's executive director.

The show's variety of items includes crib quilts, purses, Christmas-tree skirts and table runners.

"Some are traditional designs; some are mixed techniques," said Judy Wepman, the chairwoman of the quilt show.

Among the more unusual designs are a penguin ballerina quilt, a Harley-Davidson quilt and a Halloween-inspired quilt.

Quilters from the Carolina Pine Quilt Guild and the Pieceful Hearts Quilt Guild have items in the display, which takes up several rooms in the museum.

Judging of the quilts was held Tuesday, and the exhibit opened Wednesday.

Although the judges have given their awards, one has yet to be determined. A Viewer's Choice Award will be based on the votes of museum visitors who take in the quilt display.

Quilts can be viewed during museum hours -- 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday.
