Greenbrier senior stars bound for Georgia Tech

A high school library isn't the usual hangout for juniors and seniors on a Friday afternoon.

But almost 100 students crammed into the Greenbrier media center Friday to see two of their own, Brandon Cumpton and Jeff Rowland, sign to play baseball at Georgia Tech.

"I didn't need to send out any invitations for this one," Greenbrier assistant principal Ed Williams said just before he muscled his way through the crowd to the table where Cumpton and Rowland sat.

Williams retired as coach of the Greenbrier baseball team after leading last season's squad to a Class AAAA state championship. When the team hoisted its fourth state title trophy in school history last June, the former baseball coach said part of him wished baseball season would never end. For Cumpton and Rowland, it never did.

"The night after we won state we went to Atlanta to play in a tournament. It's been non-stop ever since," Rowland said.

The two friends rarely stepped on the diamond apart from each other this summer. They played on the Savannah Chain travel team.

Not even college could separate the Augusta area's top two baseball seniors.

"We wanted to go to the same place, but we kind of kept it a secret," Rowland said. "It's a huge relief to have it over with."

Rowland hit .411 for the Wolfpack last season with 54 runs scored and 32 RBI while Cumpton hit .359 at and went 14-1 with a 1.89 ERA.

Rowland and Cumpton's signing was just another in a string of Greenbrier baseball prospects to commit during the early signing period. Former Greenbrier star Ben Tankersley signed early with Presbyterian College two years ago. Rich Poythress committed to Georgia last year.

Both Tankersley and Poythress went on to have stellar senior seasons. Greenbrier baseball coach Rodney Holder, who will take over for Williams this spring, said he hopes an early signing for two of his top seniors will produce similar results.

"It takes the pressure off, and they can go out and be the leaders we need them to be," he said.

Also on Friday, Greenbrier's Tiffany Blackburn, a four-year star on the softball team, signed with North Georgia.
