High school bands from across the state will perform in Augusta this weekend.
The Garden City Band Invitational will be held Saturday at the Academy of Richmond County's football stadium. The event is being held to showcase the talents of the bands and as a fundraiser for the band program at Richmond Academy, said band director Arthur Wright.
People can expect "performances from various bands, to hear some great music and see the kids have a good time," Mr. Wright said.
Area high school bands participating are from Richmond Academy and Glenn Hills. Other bands include those from Meadowcreek High School in Norcross, Ga., and Benjamin Banneker High School in Atlanta. Bands from three other schools, including one from Savannah, were not yet confirmed.
Mr. Wright said the show is an educational experience at which students can watch and learn from other bands.
"One reason we're doing this is because we eventually want to make it a competition," he said. "There's not really a competition of this nature in the Augusta area.
"In the future we want to have guest college bands come perform and have college directors judge the bands."
