Mathis has banner night for Jaguars

MACON, Ga. --- Derrick Mathis scored points four different ways as Thomas Jefferson closed out the regular season with a 51-15 victory over Covenant on Friday night.

Mathis scored two rushing touchdowns (35 and 33 yards), scored on a punt return (40 yards), kicked a field goal (18 yards) and was 2-for-2 on PATs. He ended up with 23 points.

Logan Purdue had touchdown runs of 44 and 5 yards for the winners, and finished with 98 yards on the ground.

Mathis now has 113 touchdowns in his career.

The Jaguars enter the playoffs with a 9-1 record.

Laney led 6-0 after one quarter, then scored twice in the second period to go up 20-0 at halftime.

Montavious Myricks had 199 yards, Dontavias Gibson rushed for 144 and Tavaris Neal had 104.

Glascock, which is playing a non-region schedule this year, closed out an 8-2 season.

In Hilton Head Island, S.C., South Aiken scored 21 unanswered fourth quarter points to upset top-seeded Hilton Head High in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs.

Tanner Hawley scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 1:46 to play for the game-winner for the Thoroughbreds, who have three victories.

WILLISTON-ELKO 42, WHITMIRE 20

WILLISTON, S.C. --- Josh Epps and Williston-Elko came alive in the second half as the Blue Devils opened the Class A playoffs with a victory.

It was 14-14 at halftime, then Epps went to work. He scored all four of his touchdowns in the second half, on runs of 60, 8, 6 and 5 yards and ended up with 196 yards.

Dexter Staley had two touchdown runs and 121 yards on the ground. The Blue Devils rushed for 346 yards.

Williston-Elko (10-1) is at Christ Church on Friday in the second round.

WASHINGTON, Ga. --- Place-kicker Ethan Lapan was a bright spot for the Irish in the Region 7-A loss to the Tigers.

Lapan accounted for all of Aquinas' points on two field goals, including a 50-yarder. His other field goal was a 33-yarder.
