AIKEN - With most votes counted, frequent political candidate Rebekah "Reb" Sutherland was losing a hard-fought school board race Tuesday with Valerie Towles for representation of District 2.
With 10 of 10 precincts, not including absentee ballots, as of 10:15 p.m., Mrs. Towles appeared to be the victor with 64 percent. That's compared to 36 percent for Mrs. Sutherland.
The quirky Mrs. Sutherland has run for governor, state House representative and superintendent of education, all unsuccessfully.
Her opponent has characterized her efforts as a desperate attempt to hold an office, any office.
Mrs. Towles said Tuesday evening her key to victory appeared to be a key endorsement from previous seat holder Art Haddon and help from influential members of the church community.
Mrs. Sutherland is a former educator who says the school system is in need of reform.
Both women are scientists.
"It will take me a week to catch up on my sleep," Mrs. Towles said, anticipating her soon-to-begin role on the board.
In other school board races:
With seven of seven precincts counted, not including absentee, incumbent Lawrence Murphy was leading the District 3 race with 392 votes, or 54 percent. Jeff Jones had 46 percent.
With six of 16 precincts reporting, including absentee, former Chukker Creek Elementary School principal Christine Sanders was leading the District 6 race with 44 percent. Incumbent Andrew Yaun had 37 percent. Steve Cartin had 19 percent.
District 5 incumbent Thomas Goforth and District 7 incumbent Rosemary English ran unopposed.
