Democrat Pete Warren appeared headed toward an upset of incumbent Georgia Rep. George DeLoach for House District 99.
Incumbent Rep. Albert Anderson, D-Waynesboro, seemed as if she would hang onto her House District 100 seat over Republican Betty Daniel White.
With 10 of 12 precincts reporting, Mr. Warren led with 4,208, or 53 percent, to 3,721, or 47 percent, for Mr. DeLoach, a funeral director and four-term incumbent.
Changes to his district during reapportionment had not left "a level playing field," Mr. DeLoach said. "We hope for the best, and we've done all we could do."
Mr. Warren, an employee of International Paper, campaigned on being more aggressive in bringing jobs to the area. He pledged to take unpaid leave from work, if necessary, to serve.
Ms. Anderson trailed Ms. White coming out of Burke County but took a lead in Richmond County, garnering 4,897, or 56 percent, to 3,771, or 44 percent, for Ms. White, who was making her first run for office.
Ms. Anderson said she was confident she would win, because when she tried to leave politics earlier this year, her constituents begged her not to quit.
"So, I feel it just wasn't my time to go," Ms. Anderson said.
