Shelby Roberts
STATS: 17, senior at John S. Davidson Fine Arts School
WHAT: Musician, vocalist, actress and leader
HER STORY: With leadership positions in several clubs, wonderful grades and hundreds of volunteer hours, Shelby might seem like your usual overachiever. There's something a lot more profound about her, though: her love of music.
"Music definitely means a lot to me. It's been in my life technically since before I was born," she said.
Shelby plays saxophone and flute, and has been playing piano and singing from a young age. She's a member of the Davidson band and chorale and the Augusta State University Conservatory Band, and she takes musical theater at Davidson.
Shelby likes to compose music on her piano and listen to a range of musicians, from Alicia Keys to Frank Sinatra.
She is always looking for different ways to share her talents with others. She is the president of the Davidson chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, an organization focused on community outreach with music, and she recently played Mary in Unbroken, a Westobou Festival musical theater production.
"The right music can help anybody when they really connect with it," she said.
