'Homegrown' Warriors shut down Laney offense

Rock beats scissors. Scissors beat paper. Paper covers rock. Homegrowns beat All-Stars.

That seems right after Jefferson County's 14-0 win at Laney on Friday. Jefferson County coach J.B. Arnold said last week he'd bring a bus of "homegrowns" from his area to take on a team with two key transfers he dubbed the "CSRA All-Stars."

The Warriors (6-2-1) capitalized on four turnovers. Short fields after special team errors gave Jefferson 30 and 34-yard scoring drives to secure the win.

The Warriors held Laney to six first downs. The Wildcats had 76 total yards of offense. Their offense had a net loss of two yards in the second half.

Arnold credited his assistants and had a big hug for defensive coordinator David Land afterward.

"That's a sweet victory," Arnold told Land during the exchange.

LANEY NEEDS: The Wildcats (6-2) have a chemistry problem. It's not bad chemistry. Just no chemistry.

The merry-go-round at quarterback has hurt the offense. The team's play under center is not in midseason form yet, much less rounding into playoff form.

"Consistency was the big deal," Laney coach Lemuel Lackey said. "We were trying to find some consistency and rhythm on offense, but we never could get enough of that going to win a big game."

Kwame Cunningham started the year at quarterback, but he gave way to Cameron Stallings after a knee injury. Stallings won the Strom Thurmond game and moved the ball enough to beat likely region champion Swainsboro.

Stallings is just a threat with his legs. A healthy Cunningham is now mostly a passing threat.

Then came current starter Calvin Fuller. The South Aiken transfer is struggling to adapt to the speed of the game from South Carolina to Georgia. The Warriors sacked him seven times, mostly while he was sprinting out of the pocket.

Cunningham's injury stunted the offense's potential from the start. Fuller is the best option now, but he may not have enough time to get ready for a playoff push.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: The South Carolina High School League set the Class AAAA playoff bracket Saturday morning in Columbia. North Augusta benefited from an 23-20 upset win against Region 4-AAAA champion Irmo.

North Augusta (6-5) is the No. 12 seed in Division II and will go on the road to face Westside-Anderson (9-2), the No. 5 seed. Aiken (5-6) is the No. 8 seed. The Hornets play host to No. 9 South Pointe (8-3) on Friday night.

South Aiken (5-6) earned a No. 13 seed by beating Aiken. The Thoroughbreds drew a Beaufort (9-2) team that was slotted fourth in the 16-team bracket.

GAMES MOVED: Security staffing issues have led to a change in Friday's area schedule.

Laney's trip to Josey has been moved to a 4 p.m. kickoff on Saturday. Butler at Glenn Hills also has been moved to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Richmond County Board of Education athletic director George Bailey confirmed those changes Saturday afternoon.

LINCOLN LOGJAM: Lincoln County's 12-7 loss at Twiggs County means the defending Georgia Class A champs may fall to the No. 3 playoff seed in Region 7-A.

Lincoln County, Twiggs County and Warren County are locked in a first-place tie with identical 5-1 records in region play.

That tie will break with the result of Friday's Twiggs County-Wilkinson County game. That's if Lincoln County and Warren County beat teams with two combined region wins.

If all three teams finish with 6-1 region records, the seeds would be set by the tiebreaker rules that govern the region. Warren County would claim the No. 1 seed because of a Class A victory against Jefferson outside of region play.

Neither Lincoln County nor Twiggs County played any Class A teams outside of region play.

In the same scenario, Twiggs County (6-3) would earn the No. 2 seed thanks to its head-to-head win against Lincoln County. The Red Devils would get the No. 3 seed.

A Wilkinson County (4-4-1) win against Twiggs County would give the Red Devils (8-1) the region title outright.

Warren County (7-2) gets a home playoff game no matter what happens Friday night.
