PALM COAST, Fla. --- Vaughn Taylor birdied his final three holes Saturday for 3-under-par 69 to move within three shots of the lead in the Ginn sur Mer Classic.
The Evans resident, who needs a high finish to help secure his PGA Tour card for 2009, moved from a tie for 23rd place to a tie for seventh. He's 129th on the money list and only the top 125 keep their cards.
Taylor and the field in the second-to-last event of the year will be chasing Michael Letzig today.
Letzig birdied three of the final six holes for 70 that gave him a one-shot lead over Kenneth Ferrie (67), John Huston (70) and Ryan Palmer (72).
Brian Gay, who spent part of his youth in Louisville, Ga., is tied for 14th place after shooting 72 and is five strokes off the pace.
Gay, 33rd on the money list, needs to finish in the top 30 after next week's final tournament to qualify for the 2009 Masters Tournament.
Letzig, who shared the first-round lead, finished off his run of birdies with a 7-foot putt on the par-5 18th that put him at 7-under 209.
EUROPEAN TOUR: In Sotogrande, Spain, Sergio Garcia and Soren Kjeldsen are the co-leaders in the Volvo Masters, which had play halted for the second consecutive day by rain.
Garcia is 1-under par through seven holes of the third round and Kjeldsen 1-over through six. They are 5-under for the tournament.
Lee Westwood is 4-under for the tournament after playing his first six holes in even par.
LPGA Tour: In Incheon, South Korea, In-Kyung Kim sank a 45-foot birdie putt on the final hole for 3-under-par 69 to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the Kolon Championship.
Kim is at 5-under 139 heading into today's finale of the 54-hole event.
She leads Hee-Won Han of South Korea (69) and Karen Stupples of England (70).
Katherine Hull, who led by two shots after the opening round, struggled with 76 and fell three strokes back.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: In Sonoma, Calif., heavy rains forced the postponement of the third round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
Play was suspended at the season-ending event for more 31/2 hours before officials made the decision to delay the remainder of the tournament until today.
Only a handful of players had made the turn, with leader Andy Bean playing only four holes when play was halted.
Bean played those holes in even par and is at 10-under. John Cook was 2-under for six holes and is in second place at 8-under for the tournament.
