Grovetown police say they think this week's interception of a FedEx delivery box containing almost 20 pounds of marijuana is connected to last week's arrest of five men on drug-trafficking charges.
"We do believe (the incidents) are related," Investigator Scott Wheatley said Wednesday. "What we really believe is that this is like a drop-off point."
Investigator Wheatley said he suspects the drugs are being shipped to the area, picked up and delivered elsewhere.
"There's not a lot of drug activity in that neighborhood," he said.
The five men were being held without bond at the Columbia County Detention Center on Wednesday.
They were arrested Oct. 23, Investigator Wheatley said, after police received an anonymous tip about a large amount of narcotics being transported to a residence in the 300 block of Whiskey Road.
Armed with search warrants, police found a cardboard box containing four packages of marijuana.
Gregorio Gomez Gonzalez, 35; Carmen Rosado Romero, 33; Plutarco Debios Herrera, 20; Abel Mitio Catrera, 20; and Rugelio Hernandez Gonzalez, 43, were arrested.
On Tuesday, authorities with the Grovetown Department of Public Safety received another anonymous tip about drugs being delivered to a residence in the 300 block of Whiskey Road, Investigator Wheatley said. About 10:30 a.m., the marijuana was seized, police said. No arrests were made.
