Wardlaw captures state volleyball title
Wardlaw Academy defeated Coastal Christian in straight sets Monday to capture its second consecutive state volleyball championship.
The Patriots committed just four errors on the night, winning 25-17, 25-16, 26-14.
On Saturday, Wardlaw beat Long Cane, James Island Christian and Palmetto Christian for the Upper State championship. They finished the year with a 24-1 record.
Golf
Geury leads Jags to fourth-pace finish
In Southern Pines, N.C., Augusta State's women's golf team finished fourth in the Ross Resorts Invitational at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club, 17 shots behind winner Nova Southeastern (929).
Lady Jaguars senior Emilie Geury tied for second at 11-over 227, her best finish of the season. Illinois State's Stacey Miller won medalist honors with 225.

Olson's doctor says ex-coach had stroke
Lute Olson 's doctor said the former Arizona basketball coach had a stroke within the last year and he advised him to retire.
The 74-year-old Olson suddenly announced his retirement last week, two days after he appeared at the Wildcats' media day. He said at the time he was "energized" and looking forward to his 25th season with Arizona.
Dr. Steven Knope said an MRI confirmed the stroke, which left Olson with severe depression and impaired judgment.

New details emerge in Thomas incident
Officers who responded to Isiah Thomas ' home after a 911 call reporting an overdose on sleeping pills found a man passed out on the floor and gave him oxygen until an ambulance arrived.
A person familiar with the case has confirmed the victim was the former Knicks coach and NBA star, speaking on condition of anonymity because of privacy concerns.
Thomas has denied being the victim, and Harrison Police Chief David Hall again criticized the ex-coach for saying it was his 17-year-old daughter, Lauren , who required treatment.
- Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge has been given a new title, president of basketball operations, and a contract extension as the team kicks off the defense of its 17th NBA championship.

Roddick advances at Paris Masters
In Paris, Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro boosted their chances of qualifying for November's Masters Cup by winning second-round matches in straight sets at the Paris Masters.
Third-seeded Novak Djokovic was leading 6-2, 4-3 against Dmitry Tursunov when the Russian retired with an injured right shoulder, seventh-seeded Roddick beat Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4 and No. 9 seed del Potro beat Mario Ancic 6-0, 6-4.
- In Geneva, Roger Federer ended speculation over his Davis Cup plans and announced he will play for Switzerland against the United States next March.
It will be the first time in five years that the 13-time Grand Slam singles winner has broken up his early season schedule for the Davis Cup.
Boxing
Fight leaving man in coma is ruled lawful
The fight that left San Antonio boxer Oscar Diaz in a coma for two months was conducted within state laws and rules, according to a state report released Tuesday.
Diaz couldn't leave his corner before the 11th round of a fight against Delvin Rodriguez in San Antonio in July. Referee Bobby Gonzalez stopped the fight and immediately called for medical help when Diaz couldn't respond to his questions, according to the agency's report.
Diaz came out of a coma last month, and boxing promoter Ron Katz said his recovery continues.
