Food drive is lesson for children

Mamie Kelly said a children's community food drive is more than an opportunity to help feed the hungry.

"I think it's a fantastic idea that we teach the children the importance of helping others," Ms. Kelly said. "Your blessings are in your good deeds."

Ms. Kelly contributed canned goods to the Cambridge Youth Committee's food drive Saturday to benefit the Golden Harvest Food Bank.

Reggie Houston, a member of the Cambridge Property Owners Association, said the food drive not only assisted Golden Harvest but also enabled the youths to build their leadership abilities.

"Community service starts at a young age and it puts that respect into the child, duty into that child (and) it helps to develop (him or her) as an individual," Mr. Houston said.

Youth committee members who participated in Saturday's activity were:

Dante' Bond; Dominique Bond; Roderick Bond; Antonio Bullock; Leonna Deans; Jamine Fielding; Orin Foster; Alexis Hamilton; Si'Aera Harris; Reggie Houston; Myisa Lugo; Jasmine Martin; Mikayla Martin; LeNitra McCarter; James Melvin; Tempest Mothershed; Darian Postell; Amari Ray; Brianna Reed; Keari Reed; Brianna Stephens; Isla Taylor; Amanda Theis; Jaden Tucker; and Denzel Washington.
