Tony Arnold and Mike Frazier are vying for the remaining 26 months of George James' term. Mr. James resigned Sept. 29 to run for the District 4 county commission seat. The two will face off in the Nov. 4 election.

Mr. Arnold, 60, recently retired from Atlanta Gas Light Co. He has spent nearly 10 years on the city's Planning and Zoning Board and is its current chairman. He said he decided to run for the seat to improve the city for its residents and future generations.

"We need to get more involved," he said. "It is very easy to stand back and criticize those that are in office and how things are run in your city. If you really want to do something about it, get involved."

Mr. Frazier, 35, is the vice president of the Job Shop and Augusta Staffing and said he would like to see more business move to Grovetown so residents' money could be spent within the city limits.

"I'd like to make it a place, where if someone wants to go out to eat, there is a whole lot more selection available to them," he said. "There is more shopping available to them."

With a business background, Mr. Frazier said his aim is to bring all the money he can into Grovetown through new business, grants and other funding opportunities.

While Mr. Arnold has taken the traditional grass-roots campaigning approach, such as going door-to-door to meet voters, Mr. Frazier has taken a high-tech route and established an e-mail address and Web site for his campaign.
