A candidate for the District 8 Augusta Commission seat told authorities that shots were fired at him Saturday night while he was trying to fix a campaign sign that had been torn down during the day.
Robert J. Buchwitz, 37, said he had reported to Richmond County sheriff's deputies that the broken sign had been taken down by someone earlier in the day. He said he brought the sign to his shop on Georgia Highway 88.
Mr. Buchwitz said a vehicle drove slowly by his shop and someone inside fired some shots toward him, then drove away. He said that he was able to get the vehicle's license plate number and that Hephzibah police and Richmond County sheriff's deputies were investigating.
Mr. Buchwitz said no one was hurt in the incident Saturday night.
Motorcycle wreck puts rider in hospital
A man riding a motorcycle without a helmet was injured Saturday in an afternoon accident, North Augusta Department of Public Safety officials said.
The man was at the intersection of U.S. Highway 25 and Interstate 20 in front of a Burger King restaurant when his motorcycle hit a sport utility vehicle, officials said.
The man was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he was in critical condition late Saturday, officials said.
$2,000 worth of pills stolen from pharmacy
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office investigated a break-in at a pharmacy where deputies found more than $2,000 worth of prescription drugs - including controlled substances - this weekend, a police report states.
Between 7:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday, someone entered through the roof of Brynwood Pharmacy on the 3500 block of Walton Way Extension, the report states.
Missing from the business were 1,000 hydrocodone pills, 100 Viagra pills, 700 methadone pills, 500 Valium pills and 537 Xanax pills - worth a total of $2,887, the report states.
Officers saw holes in the roof and the ceiling of the business, the report states.
Burglar ransacks high school office
Authorities on Saturday investigated an overnight burglary of a high school, where officials found that someone had ransacked the cafeteria manager's office, a police report states.
The report indicates that between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, someone broke out a window on the north side of the cafeteria at Cross Creek High School and entered the building.
Richmond County sheriff's deputies found that someone broke into the cafeteria manager's office, pried open a locked closet door and took $175 from a filing cabinet, the report states.
Hiding teen arrested after house break-in
Richmond County sheriff's deputies arrested a teenager Saturday night whom they found hiding underneath a blanket after a woman told them someone broke into her home.
John Edwin Hawes, 17, was charged with felony burglary and was held at the Richmond County jail Saturday night, jail records state.
A sheriff's office report states that at 9:35 a.m., Tina Marie Reid, 30, of Virginia Avenue, flagged down Deputy Alan Alspaugh and told him that her home had been broken into and that there was still someone inside.
Deputy Alspaugh found that the rear door's glass had been broken. While checking Ms. Reid's residence, he found Mr. Hawes in the front bedroom hiding under a blanket, the report states.

Highway wreck kills man, 67
A 67-year-old Vidalia man died in a two-car accident on U.S. Highway 1 in Oak Park this weekend, according to Georgia State Patrol officials.
Marvin Courtney was pronounced dead at the scene near Highway 1 and Interstate 16 at about 2 p.m. Friday.
Swainsboro State Patrol Sgt. Sammy Young said Mr. Courtney was driving south in a 1996 Ford rollback wrecker behind Steven Manley, 42, of Dublin, who was driving a motorgrade construction vehicle.
When Mr. Courtney tried to pass Mr. Manley, he struck the back of the construction vehicle, and both vehicles stopped on the shoulder of the highway, Sgt. Young said.
Officers from the state patrol, the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office and Emanuel County EMS had to use the jaws of life to free Mr. Courtney, Sgt. Young said.
Mr. Manley was not hurt in the crash, and Mr. Courtney was traveling alone, Sgt. Young said.
"It appears that Mr. Courtney was at fault," he said.
Newborn succumbs to crash injuries
A 24-day-old boy was pronounced dead three days after he was hurt in a car accident on Windsor Spring Road, according to Richmond County officials.
Travis Hopkins was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital immediately after the crash, which occurred at about midnight Tuesday, and was in the hospital when he died from massive head trauma Friday, Richmond County Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said.
The baby's mother, Alena Clarke, 19, was riding with Travis on her lap in a 1988 Ford Mustang being driven by Travis' father, David Hopkins, 19, officials said. The Mustang was traveling north on Windsor Spring Road at the same time Aretha Gunter, 68, was driving in the opposite direction.
Mr. Bowen said that when Ms. Gunter tried to turn left onto Boykin Road, the front of her vehicle hit the front of the Mustang.
Travis reportedly hit his head when the cars collided.
According to a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report, Ms. Gunter has been charged with failure to yield while turning left, and Mr. Hopkins was driving on a suspended license.
Teenager says woman stabbed him at home
A 33-year-old Augusta woman was arrested after a 14-year-old boy who had lived with her said the woman stabbed him, according to a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report.
Rose Bowdre, of the 1600 block of Floyd Street, was charged with felony aggravated assault and felony possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and was taken to the Richmond County jail Friday.
According to the report, Ms. Bowdre and Anthony Miller got into a fight at her home and she chased him upstairs with a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the left forearm.
Augusta man reports break-in at business
A manager at Hagemeyer North America on Barton Chapel Road told police that the distribution service company was broken into Friday afternoon, according to a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report.
William Embry Hardy, 46, of Augusta, said someone broke the glass in the west front door with a fire extinguisher or brick, the report states. Mr. Hardy said he did not know whether anything had been stolen.
