Evans has asked its defense to do a lot this season, and Friday night against Hephzibah the task was familiar: make a one-score lead stand throughout the entire game.
The Knights' stingy unit obliged in a 21-12 victory, and Evans (8-0, 7-0 Region 3-AAAA) remained undefeated despite being severely outgained by a spirited opponent. Hephzibah held a 255-125 edge in total yardage, but the Knights scored touchdowns on three big plays: a 37-yard screen pass to Jonathan Finch, a 70-yard Sam Nichols punt return and a 67-yard run by Finch.
Take away those two offensive plays and Evans netted 21 yards.
"All I can say is offense brings fans, and defense wins championships," Evans defensive end Reuben Faloughi said.
Hephzibah (5-3, 5-2) dominated possession but failed to score in its final three drives when it faced a long field. It trailed 7-6, 14-6 or 14-12 a majority of the night.
"Our effort was great," Hephzibah coach John Bowen said. "These are two good ball teams ... there's a reason they are undefeated."
Bowen said his team went for the big hit on Evans' first two touchdowns instead of wrapping up the ball carrier. The punt return was especially tough to explain, considering Evans wasn't even planning a return. It was expecting a fake.
"They had faked one against everyone they played we had film on," Evans coach Marty Jackson said.
When Hephzibah's Antoine Nabors ran 39 yards on the first play of the second quarter for a 6-0 lead, it was the first time Evans trailed in a region game since its opener against Lakeside.
The Knights responded, though, with their first score. Finch zoomed 37 yards down the left sideline, splitting a pair of defenders 20 yards from the end zone before bursting free.
Finch, the region's second-leading rusher, had 73 yards on 15 carries, with 67 of those coming on a touchdown run with 4:15 left. The run was the Knights' only first-down gain of the second half. They ran only 13 plays after intermission and just two went for longer than 2 yards.
"We messed up a couple of times, but (the defense) picked us up," Finch said. "That's the best team we've played."
Nabors ran for 155 yards for Hephzibah, and his 48-yard run set up the Rebels' second score: a 1-yard sneak by Connell Reddick late in the third quarter. Trailing 14-12, the Rebels' conversion attempt again failed. First they were whistled for an illegal substitution, then Faloughi swatted down Reddick's pass attempt.
Hephzibah had three more possessions but never threatened. Each one started inside its 30-yard line. Jackson cited field position and turnover margin as reasons his team was able to hang on.
"We really didn't get much done on offense, but we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot," Jackson said.
