Schools brace for shakeup

Reclassification will become a bigger story in the days ahead.

Both Evans and Greenbrier are expected to move to Class AAAAA next fall when the area's Georgia High School Association teams are realigned yet again.

Cross Creek and Hephzibah have both been named by area coaches as two schools who might move up in class, too.

Schools are reclassified every two years. The GHSA has a new formula that involves the school's full-time enrollment count. The GHSA will take an average of school's spring and fall 2007 FTE counts to determine the appropriate student size for each school.

Schools with 1,850 or more students will be aligned in Class AAAAA. Schools with an FTE count of 525 or less will be Class A. Schools with FTE counts between 526-1849 will be divided equally among the Class AA, AAA and AAAA divisions.

Region alignments will be initially formulated in November. Schools can appeal those spots. The final ratification of the new regions will be in mid-January.

LOOKING AHEAD: North Augusta's future looks bright with junior linebacker Brett Johnson, junior halfback Tidy Johnson and junior quarterback Travis Murphy back next year. Those are impact players for a team that's already won four more games than it did last year.

It's even brighter given the team's junior varsity beat South Aiken 41-0 at home last week.

FIGHTING WORDS: Washington County coach Joel Ingram said what happened Friday night between Glenn Hills and Thomson is the worst thing that can happen to any coach. An on-field fight is even worse than a blowout loss in his mind.

"What every coach in the area finds sometimes is a Catch-22," he said. "Everyone wants to win. But you also want to run a class program. A coach can only compromise character so much putting his best players on the field. You take a risk playing a talented kid you know tends to get a little too wild from time to time. Little things with kids like that can become big things. Big things can lead to catastrophic things. You can only go so long stomping out the same fires that flare up before you get burned."

PLAY BIG: Cross Creek coach Scott Tate has been high on the play of senior offensive lineman Jared Bing of late.

Bing (6-4, 280) has made the transition from a prospect brimming with size and potential to a strong blocker this year.

JOSEY FUTURE: Josey sophomore Brandon Brown had his moments in the Screven County loss. His first pass was a strike to Robert Johnson at midfield that went for an 80-yard score. Brown, the junior varsity quarterback last season, completed passes to six different receivers.

"He's doing some real good things," Josey coach Barney Chavous said.

STAT WATCH: Washington County (2-5) has lost to five teams with an aggregate record of 30-5.
