Many mainstream country music fans don't know Guy Clark, but they've heard his music.
Ricky Skaggs had a No. 1 hit with Mr. Clark's Heartbroke .
Others having chart success with Mr. Clark's songs include Jerry Jeff Walker (L.A. Freeway) , The Highwaymen (Desperados Waiting for a Train) , Bobby Bare (New Cut Road) , Vince Gill (Oklahoma Borderline) , John Conlee (The Carpenter) , Steve Wariner (Baby I'm Yours) and Asleep at the Wheel (Blowin' Like a Bandit) .
Mr. Clark will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in the Newberry (S.C.) Opera House. Tickets are $35. Call (803) 276-6264 or see newberryoperahouse.com.
GOODBYE, PETE: One of the unique music fans of this area was Pete Fledderman, a neighbor of mine who died Oct. 5 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, at age 47.
The health physicist at Savannah River Site was there on a business trip. There will be a memorial Mass by the Rev. Tim Donahue at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Augusta at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Mr. Fledderman was a quiet, unassuming guy, so it came as a surprise when The Augusta Chronicle in 2000 held a contest to find the reader with the most concert T-shirts and Mr. Fledderman won.
His collection of more than 80 souvenir shirts included the 1977 Led Zeppelin The Song Remains the Same tour (his first concert), five different KISS concerts shirts, four Lynyrd Skynyrd shirts and others from shows by Foghat, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon and Bruce Springsteen.
"There is a lot of time put into it," he said then of his collection. "And a lot of great bands ... and a lot of not-so-great bands."
JAMES BROWN BOOK: For those who care, I'll be the first author to sign his book in the new Barnes & Noble store at Augusta Mall, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. I will autograph copies of my new Say It Loud! My Memories of James Brown, Soul Brother No. 1 .
