AIKEN --- Stephen Eubanks, a former Aiken County school administrator, was released from the county jail Wednesday afternoon on a $25,000 bond.

Mr. Eubanks is accused of sexually assaulting two students three decades ago, and state investigators say they are concerned that there might be more victims.

Jennifer Timmons, a spokeswoman for the State Law Enforcement Division, said the agency has been receiving phone calls about Mr. Eubanks on a hot line dedicated to the investigation.

"We want the calls to continue," she said, declining to say how many people have called the toll-free number or whether any are potential victims. "It is extremely important that folks use that number so we can identify more alleged victims."

SLED agents arrested the 67-year-old North Augusta man Tuesday afternoon at his home on Belair Road on charges of lewd act upon a child under the age of 16, exposing private parts, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of enticing children from school.

Ms. Timmons said in a statement that the male and female students mentioned in the arrest affidavits attended North Augusta High School and Paul Knox Junior High School in the late 1970s.

According to the Aiken County Public School District, Mr. Eubanks was an assistant principal at the high school from 1971 to 1976. He was then principal at the junior high school until he transferred to the Georgetown County School District in 1978. He later served as an administrator in Lancaster County.

According to the arrest affidavits, Mr. Eubanks engaged in sexual activity with a 14-year-old boy at his home on Argyle Avenue between 1975 and 1977 and had sexual relations with a 16-year-old girl at the same house in 1976.

Ms. Timmons said SLED started its investigation on Sept. 19 at the request of the North Augusta Department of Public Safety.

North Augusta Detective Tim Thornton said the case was sent to SLED because it was "somewhat connected to an earlier investigation" conducted by SLED of Edward Meloan, who was arrested in July 2007 on charges of molesting a 12-year-old boy in the 1970s.
