A day after two Greenbrier football players were indicted on a variety of sex charges, four other students, including three girls listed previously as victims in the case, faced new charges, authorities said Thursday.
The girls, one age 15 and two 14-year-olds, were charged with fornication for their alleged role in the incident involving senior running back Reginald Anthony Rice III and another player, Shadrick Marquie Harris, according to authorities.
A 16-year-old Grovetown boy was also charged Thursday with statutory rape in the same incident, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said. The four were not identified because of their ages, and because all four were charged as juveniles, they were released to the custody of their parents, Capt. Morris said Thursday.
The incident, which police said occurred Sept. 17 and 18, took place in a "barn-type structure" behind the home of one of the teens. A parent of one of the girls reported the incident to police Sept. 26.
Mr. Rice and Mr. Harris, both 17, were indicted Wednesday by a Columbia County grand jury. They were then arrested on sex offense counts and on charges of contributing to the delinquency of minors.
The indictment accuses Mr. Rice, of the 400 block of Louisville Road in Grovetown, of the rape of one girl and aggravated child molestation of another. Mr. Harris, of the 3300 block of Ray Owens Road in Appling, was indicted on three counts of aggravated child molestation with two girls, according to the indictment.
Mr. Rice and Mr. Harris also face three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, accused of giving alcohol to all three girls, according to the indictment.
The 16-year-old is accused of having sex with one of the 14-year-old girls, Capt. Morris said.
Mr. Rice and Mr. Harris are being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond. A bond hearing was not expected before today, Capt. Morris said.
No date has been set for the four minors to appear in Juvenile Court, nor has a date been set for an arraignment for Mr. Rice and Mr. Harris in Superior Court.
Because Mr. Rice and Mr. Harris were charged with aggravated child molestation, they are automatically expelled from school pending the outcome of a trial, Associate Superintendent Charles Nagle said. School officials could reinstate them if so directed by the district attorney or a judge, he said.
A judge will have to determine if the boy charged with statutory rape can return to school. Most likely, he will be expelled or sent to alternative school, Mr. Nagle said.
