Knights gelling thanks to leaders

Evans coach Marty Jackson can thank the written word for a 6-0 start.

The Knights likely wouldn't be going for 7-0 tonight at Brunswick without the prose of Billy Donovan, Sir Thomas Malory and Urban Meyer.

Jackson was an avid reader before the season. He found nuggets of leadership in books written by both championship coaches from the University of Florida.

The big thing was how to teach a team filled with great athletes not to be selfish.

"Coach Meyer asked Billy Donovan that," Jackson said. "Billy Donovan said it was to just have one goal. To win. He didn't care how. Or who got the ball. The only goal was to win."

He decided the 2007 Knights were only going to think about the present.

"We stopped worrying about things like the county championship," he said.

"Just one thing at a time. I went on the Rutgers Web site and read about their coach and liked his philosophy of just chopping wood every day."

Jackson created a Knights of the Round Table at Evans based on Mallory's legends of King Arthur. His round table was made up of 14 players hand-picked from the sophomore, junior and senior classes.

All 14 players were lined up in a circle at the first meeting.

"The bottom line is those 14 guys give me the heartbeat of our team," he said.

That group organizes team meals. They organized Statesboro film review when the team didn't have time this week. They told Jackson they wanted the 'E' put back on the team helmet."

Jackson wished he'd done something similar earlier in his 19-year coaching career.

"That's our secret society," he said. "No one knows who they are but our team. They really are a service organization. They get no privileges. They're not at the front of the line at team meals. They would probably be the ones serving tea at team meals, not getting to go to the front of the line."

STRONG WORDS: Jefferson County coach J.B. Arnold has sent receivers like Sean Walker to Vanderbilt and Charles Brown to Wofford. Walker scored twice against Georgia last Saturday.

But Arnold thinks he's got the best he's ever had at Jefferson County right now.

That's how well senior Marcus Mayo is playing these days.

"He's the best I've had," Arnold said. "It's all he does. The route-running. He's so precise with his routes. He takes that seriously. Then it's his hands. Then his blocking. He's mean and strong. He'll be fine not catching a ball and just block a guy's tail off. He's the best at everything it takes to be an all-around receiver."

Mayo (5-10. 175) leads the area with his 532 receiving yards and six touchdown catches.

GAMER: It's hard to top the game Brandell Gilbert had leading Blackville-Hilda past top-ranked Bamberg-Erhardt.

Gilbert scored the only touchdown in a 7-6 win on a 40-yard run. He also had 14 tackles, forced two fumbles and recovered one.
